Welcome to Kennett
Situated in Chester County, Kennett Square is commonly known as the Mushroom Capital of the world due in part to its extensive mushroom farms producing millions of pounds of mushrooms by the day. Because of this, the town holds a yearly Kennett Mushroom Festival in September with a parade and tours of the various mushroom farms.
Kennett Square was originally inhabited by Native Americans. The area was named “Kennet” after Kennet in England and the “Square” originated from a land grant that was one square mile. Kennett Square also played a significant role during the underground railroad, which helped slaves to the north for freedom. Today Kennett Square is home to the corporate headquarters for Genesis HealthCare, which administers elderly care with a population of roughly 6,000.
